Neil Lightowler has a B.Eng (Hons) degree and PhD in Engineering from the University of Aberdeen. He is also a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
Neil has worked in IP since 2014, initially with SKF, then with IMEC in Belgium before joining Murgitroyd’s Aberdeen office in 2021. Prior to this he spent several years as a consultant to early stage technology companies after successfully commercialising his own innovations and playing an integral part in the creation and development of an electronics company which successfully floated on AIM.
Neil is a strong promoter of innovation and has extensive experience of turning innovation into business success. He is well versed in developing IP strategies and patent portfolios to support new and growing business. His business focussed IP experience also includes due diligence and Freedom To Operate (FTO).
Neil also has significant technical experience, having studied for his first degree in general engineering at the University of Aberdeen which encompassed both electrical and mechanical engineering disciplines. He then went on to study electronics with a focus on computing with Artificial Neural Networks and AI for his PhD. Since then he has worked with a diverse range of technologies over a wide range of business sectors including oil & gas, automotive, and renewables.
