Andrew Alton handles physics-based and electronics-based inventions and has expertise in the patenting of computer hardware and software, having acted for Sun Microsystems, Microsoft and Apple. Technologies handled include semiconductor devices, wireless telecommunications hardware, digital signal processing, website architectures, wireless gaming, machine learning, user interfaces, computer-implemented business methods and bioinformatics. He advises a wide range of clients including universities, NHS Trusts, SMEs, PLCs and multinationals, on the protection and enforcement of all aspects of intellectual property.
He also has experience of telecommunications including mobile phone base station technologies, such as filters and amplifiers, DSL/ADSL, data compression, and computer video and data signal transmission.
He also has wide experience of patenting medical technologies, and especially those involving software or electronics, such as computer-assisted surgery.
He represents clients at UK Intellectual Property Office hearings on computer-implemented inventions and at Oral Proceedings before the Examining Division, Opposition Division and Technical Boards of Appeal at the European Patent Office.
In addition, Andrew is a qualified US patent agent and has worked in Silicon Valley drafting and prosecuting US patent applications. He has been a member of the Computer Technology Committee of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and regularly speaks and writes about software patents.
Prior to UDL, Andrew was an examiner in the electrical division of the UK Patent Office working on acoustic, alarm, optical and computer systems. He entered the profession in 1996, became a partner in 2006 and became a consultant in 2020.
