A Unique Blend
Our organic growth over the years has been impressive, but we’ve also been proactive on the acquisition front too, creating a unique blend of exceptional talent and experience and a broad suite of IP services.
Below you’ll find the stories of some of the highly successful and dynamic companies who have joined us on our mission to provide the highest levels of strategic advice and top quartile service to our clients and their businesses.
TLIP – December 2022
Founded in 2014 by Dr Alex Turnbull and Paul Lynch, TLIP was a specialist UK-based IP firm with offices in Cambridge, Dublin and Leeds. Employing 14 people, including nine attorneys, TLIP had a well-established reputation of working with high growth companies to deliver commercially focused IP strategies.
TLIP’s focus on commitment, integrity and truly getting to know its clients’ motivations and objectives, helped deliver the best possible strategic advice, which fitted perfectly with our own approach to IP protection.
While TLIP’s Dublin and Leeds-based staff moved seamlessly into our existing offices in those cities, its well-established presence in Cambridge — situated in one of the UK’s leading innovation hubs, Chesterford Research Park — brought stronger links within the growing UK-based biotechnology, pharmaceutical and technology sectors.
The acquisition of TLIP brought our headcount to over 470 people, including over 140 attorneys, and further strengthened our position as a leading player — and one of the fastest-growing businesses — in the European IP protection sector.
Creation IP – April 2022
Creation IP was jointly owned by its founders, Bryn Williams and John Collins, both experienced patent attorneys who started the business in 2012 having previously worked together at another UK IP firm.
Their sole objective was to provide “a high value innovation support service to clients, both big and small” and their client list included a broad spectrum of innovative companies, ranging from Scottish based spin-outs and start-up businesses through to larger SMEs and US-based corporates.
Creation IP had 12 team members, all of whom transferred to Murgitroyd upon completion of the acquisition. The business was previously based in Hillington Park Innovation Centre, Glasgow.
The acquisition increased Murgitroyd’s headcount to more than 450 and underlined its position as a leading consolidator in the international IP sector.
UDL – October 2021
UDL, founded over 100 years ago, was headquartered in Leeds, with offices in Bristol, Cardiff, London, Milton Keynes, and Newcastle, and specialised in the preparation, filing and prosecution of patents and trade marks, representing clients before the UK, European and international intellectual property offices.
UDL had a total of 80 staff, including twelve partners, and all staff remained with the enlarged business.
This acquisition was a significant step forward in enhancing the scale and reach of Murgitroyd in the UK and strengthened our overall presence in Europe. UDL had an excellent reputation for advising innovative companies and its focus on legal excellence, deep sector knowledge and strategically focused, pragmantic advice complemented Murgitroyd’s client-centred approach. Like Murgitroyd, UDL’s people were at the heart of its business and our strong cultural alignment ensured that the teams were stronger together, creating a more compelling and attractive client offering.
The addition of UDL advanced our strategic ambitions, as we continue to grow Murgitroyd through a blend of organic development and carefully selected additions, to create the European leader in IP professional and support services. This growth will enhance our client capabilities and the unified scale enables us to support the IP needs of even the largest of businesses.
Hanna Moore + Curley – August 2021
Dublin-headquartered Hanna Moore + Curley specialised in obtaining intellectual property protection for a wide range of sectors including life sciences, electronic and technology-led companies – and had a presence in China, which expanded Murgitroyd’s global reach in the Far East.
The addition of HMC advanced Murgitroyd’s strategic ambition to grow the business in Europe, broadening support for our North American corporate clients and adding a new dimension to our business development in Asia.
To meet emerging intellectual property demands and anticipate the challenges facing local, national and international clients, many of whom are at the leading edge in their fields, this union increased the scale and depth of our technical knowledge and expertise and expanded our global footprint.
Businesses which utilise intellectual property as a strategic business asset, benefit from proactive, informed and innovative advice to produce IP assets of enduring corporate value. This demands that Murgitroyd invest in high calibre talent, providing sector-leading technical knowledge whilst developing closer, strategic relationships with clients.
HMC’s talented team strengthened our reach within Europe and our presence in the Far East – a region which continues to be of increasing interest to our clients – adding specialist knowledge in the electronics, software and digital sectors in particular.
Chapman IP – 2019
Chapman IP, based in Southampton, was founded in 2002 and traded successfully and consistently for nearly two decades. It was a well-run, modern and dynamic practice that employed highly talented people who managed a portfolio of exciting clients, whilst consistently delivering excellent growth. The Chapman practice was a strong addition to the Murgitroyd team and has proven not only to be a great fit but also a critical contributor to Murgitroyd’s future growth.
MDB Capital Group – Patentvest S.A. – 2016
Based in the USA and Nicaragua respectively, Murgitroyd acquired a select group of assets from the MDB Capital Group business along with eighteen staff, including sixteen Managua-based Patent engineers, who were predominantly engaged in US Patent searching. US qualified Patent Attorneys, Michael Chernoff and John Wootress joined the business from MDB at this time and still play active and important roles within the current Murgitroyd business.
This acquisition enhanced the scope of our offerings to clients, including the highest quality of patent searching.
Raworth Moss & Cook – 2009
Founded in 1894, Raworth Moss & Cook was one of the United Kingdom’s oldest-established, independent intellectual property law firms. The partnership of European Patent Attorneys, UK Chartered Patent Attorneys, European Trade Mark Attorneys and UK Registered Trade Mark Attorneys was supported by substantial in-house expertise.
Kennedys – 2008
Founded in 1997, Kennedys Patent Agency Limited provided a full range of intellectual property (IP) services through its offices in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Newcastle, including patent and trademark advice and applications, advice on IP law and the strategic use of IP within organisations.
Fitzpatricks – 2006
Fitzpatricks was a well-regarded Glasgow based firm of patent and trade mark attorneys. 24 staff in total consisting of 8 Attorneys and 16 support staff joined the Murgitroyd team and we’re delighted that some of the original Fitzpatrick team are still with us and continue to make valuable contributions to our business. We’re also delighted to be serving to this day many clients who have chosen to continue to work with our Attorneys.
Castles – 2005
Castles was a well-established, very successful and highly respected London based practice with 15 staff, amongst them 5 experienced Attorneys and 3 paralegals. This acquisition gave Murgitroyd a solid presence in London and the burgeoning southeast of England marketplace.
Cabinet Bonneau – 2003
Cabinet Bonneau was a French Patent and Trade Mark Attorney practice based in Sophia Antipolis, near Nice. Cabinet Bonneau was one of only three IP practices based in the Nice area and the acquisition meant that, at this time, Murgitroyd was one of only two practices operating in the south of France, servicing clients throughout the Monaco and Aix-en-Provence territories. We’re delighted to still have some former Cabinet Bonneau colleagues in our Nice Office team to this day who continue to represent our clients in France.
