Protecting the Star Wars Brand

Have you ever considered changing your name by deed poll to your favourite TV or film character’s name?

Laura Matthews from Southend did just that in 2008 when she added Skywalker as her middle name. However, when recently renewing her passport she has learned that the Home Office has very strict guidelines on protecting intellectual property law. They refused to accept her signature L. Skywalker on the grounds that it will not recognise a change of name ‘which is subject to copyright or trade mark’ which could damage the reputation of a UK passport.

She has since been allowed to renew her passport by using a signature which does not include the word Skywalker.

Just something to consider if you’re thinking of changing your name!
