This week saw the start of the UK’s most famous tennis competition – Wimbledon!
To celebrate the start of this year’s historic competition which will see Andy Murray, the first British male to defend the title in 77 years, we thought we’d share with you some trade mark tennis facts.
- Did you know that the current coloured Wimbledon emblem was filed as a trademark in 1986!
- Jack C Scott invented both the ‘tennis ball retriever’ and ‘tennis ball throwing machine’ in the 1970’s.
Major Walter Clopton Wingfield, an officer in the British Army, was formally admitted to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1997 as the accepted founder of modern lawn tennis. Not only did he invent the game, he published a book about the sport in 1873 and patented the very first pieces of lawn tennis equipment in 1874!
