The recent revival of the ukulele has resulted in ukulele orchestras appearing around the globe.
The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain was formed 29 years ago and has played at venues including the Sydney Opera House, has released numerous albums and, according to their website, is “often blamed for the current ukulele revival”.
How does this tie into IP? Well, the United Kingdom Ukulele Orchestra was recently formed by some British musicians in Germany and the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain claim that their trade mark is being infringed. They have even gone as far as saying that their reputation is being damaged and they may be losing bookings due to the similarity of the name. During court proceedings, they even tried to get an injunction banning the United Kingdom Ukulele Orchestra’s tour but the judge said it was too late.
