In 1991 Fiona joined Fitzpatricks, a firm of patent and trademark attorneys in Glasgow acquired by Murgitroyd in 2006. Her core area of expertise is biotechnology and related areas like virology, microbiology and genetics. She’s also expert in the medical field, including medical devices like orthopaedic implants and prosthetics, wound management technologies, biochemistry and immunology.

She primarily works as a patent attorney but is also a qualified trade mark and design attorney.

She’s gained valuable knowledge and experience of a wide variety of intellectual property proceedings during her time in the field. These include oppositions and appeals before the European Patent Office, patent restoration cases before the UKIPO and infringement and validity opinion work. Her expertise also includes preparing and prosecuting designs and trade marks relating to the pharmaceutical and veterinary industry.

Fiona has carried out work relating to lesser-known plant variety rights, and filing and prosecuting supplementary protection certificates. She’s a member of Murgitroyd’s Supplementary Protection Certificate (SPC) and regulatory team.

Having travelled widely in Latin America, Fiona takes particular interest in their IP laws. She’s worked extensively with a number of Latin American countries and companies to obtain IP protection both there and in Europe.
