John Wootress has over 22 years of experience in the IP field and before joining Murgitroyd, was the Director of Intellectual Property Development at MDB Capital Group, LLC where he managed the IP strategy research, prior art searching, patent drafting, and training of MDB’s engineering staff for the Intellectual Property Development Services division of the Group.

Prior to serving at MDB, he was employed as Deputy General Counsel for Belkin International, as an Associate General Counsel for Aristocrat Technologies Inc. and as an Associate at Merchant & Gould, where he drafted and prosecuted patent applications for software, analog electronics, touch screen systems, and semi-conductor processing on behalf of clients including Microsoft, National Semiconductor, and 3M.

Previous to completing engineering school, John served as a commissioned officer in the Infantry and Special Operations branches of the United States Army Reserve.

John holds a Master of Laws in Intellectual Property from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, and a J.D. from Gonzaga University, where he also earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. John has several Bar admissions including: the Washington State Bar Association and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.
