Jonathan Cray

Dr Jonathan (Johnny) Cray is a Senior Patent Attorney and Practice Coordinator for the Life Sciences and Chemistry teams at Murgitroyd. In his role, Johnny oversees strategic patent portfolio management, supports team development, and ensures high-quality service delivery across a broad range of technical disciplines.

With over a decade of experience in intellectual property, Johnny specialises in biotechnology, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, while also comfortably handling mechanical engineering cases. He manages global patent portfolios for leading multinational biotech companies and regularly represents clients in European Patent Office (EPO) opposition proceedings. Johnny also works closely with technology transfer offices at local universities, helping to protect and commercialise academic innovations.

Johnny began his IP career in 2015 as a patent analyst at a prominent London-based law firm, contributing to high-profile patent litigation cases. He qualified as a UK and European Patent Attorney in 2021 and joined Murgitroyd in 2022.

He holds a PhD in Microbiology from Queen’s University Belfast and is a member of both the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and the Institute of Professional Representatives before the EPO.

Johnny takes a collaborative and commercially focused approach to IP, working closely with inventors, in-house counsel, and R&D teams to align patent strategy with business goals. He is known for his clear communication, strategic insight, and commitment to client success.
