Terence Broderick

Terence Broderick

Senior European Patent Attorney

Terence’s practice focuses primarily on the area ofartificial intelligence and cybersecurity, and has significant recent experience working on applications in heavy industry (e.g. IoT monitoring, industrial drying processes), healthcare (e.g. genetic analysis) and cryptography (e.g. signature generation and error correction) where he is passionate about the real-world application of his clients’ innovation.

With a background in mathematics, Terence has the technical skills and knowledge required to deeply understand any technology with a significant mathematical component. Thanks to his keen eye for detail and vast experience in dealing with patent authorities, Terence is able to explain the key features of inventions clearly and concisely to ensure the maximum levels of patent protection are achieved and is happy working in areas close to subject matter exclusions. An ability to keep up with the many nuances of law before the UKIPO and EPO has led to his renown as a ‘fixer’ in matters where prosecution has dragged on or taken a turn for the worst.

Terence is also experienced in portfolio management having worked with many clients with large, multi-jurisdictional portfolios where protection and prosecution strategies need to be aligned.

This has led to him possessing considerable knowledge of prosecuting patent applications across many jurisdictions including the UK, Europe, China, Japan, Taiwan, India, Australia and the US.

With further skills including advising on difficult procedural matters (such as restoration applications) and IP transactions (especially assignments, licenses and securities relating to patents), Terence is regarded as one of the top up-and-coming patent attorneys in the country. He is regularly recommended by The Legal 500 and sits on CIPA’s Patents Committee.

Terence leads the firm’s efforts in developing its AI practice and is also a central part of the firms Asia Development group, where his experience working with clients in these markets is key to the firm’s ambitions.

A keen writer, Terence regularly shares his knowledge and perspective on all things IP. He has previously been recognised as the top UK ‘legal influencer’ in the IP industry by Lexology.

Terence is based in our Cardiff office.
