Robert Ljungberg

Director, Patents

Robert Ljungberg specialises in European patent matters, including litigation, prosecution and opposition proceedings before the European and Nordic Patent Offices. He also works on EU design applications.

His work covers a broad range of technologies, including oil and gas, telecommunication, automotives, medical devices, paper and related products, packaging and patents for business methods implemented by software.

As a former examiner at the EPO, Robert has extensive knowledge of their internal structure and proceedings. That means quick results, granted applications and solutions to even apparently impossible applications.

Clients benefit from his experience of conducting oppositions before the EPO, because he is one of few with experience from within the opposition divisions as well as before them. Robert is particularly familiar with prior art searches and the European and international classification systems. He is also very knowledgeable about the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH).

In addition, Robert has particular knowledge of national IP law and registers of many EU member states, especially the UK and the Nordic states. He also has experience of handling EU customs applications. For Norway he specialises in oil and gas exploration and production, downhole tools and processes, petrochemicals, and mining and earthworks.

Robert studied mechanical engineering at the Institute of Technology in Linköping, Sweden, concentrating on computer technology and mechatronics. His American law degree together with his European legal experience is an asset for clients. In his career with the EPO, he focused on technical areas like machine tools and robotics, and worked on applications involving paper products, packaging, automotive equipment, and medical devices.

Robert is in charge of the Nordic expansion of Murgitroyd and works in our Helsinki office.

We look at patents as a value not a cost. It's really important to have a partner that understands our product. We don't want a partner who is just an administrator, we want a partner who challenges us.
