Andrew Sunderland

Directeur, Brevets

Andrew Sunderland is a highly experienced patent attorney who works across a broad range of technical fields. While his focus is on mechanical devices and consumer electronics, Andrew also has significant experience in biomedical technology, software, telecommunications (including SEPs), data manipulation, automotive engineering, biometrics and sensors, and audio/video signal processing.

Andrew guides all types of clients — from multinationals to individual inventors — through every stage of the patent lifecycle, from initial drafting through to prosecution and grant. This requires him to maintain a broad overview of his clients’ portfolios. By taking the time to really get to know his clients, Andrew ensures that he is responsive to their needs. When required, he is adept at producing high quality work under time pressure. He also has substantial experience in representing applicants in oral proceedings before the EPO and is a qualified IP litigator.

With a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and as an Associate Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Andrew enjoys keeping up with the latest innovation and technology trends from industry. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and a Member of the Institute of Professional Representatives before the EPO.

Andrew is deeply involved in representing the IP profession in his role as a member of the Council of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA). Previously a member of the committee overseeing the ‘Women in IP’ initiative, Andrew is passionate about IP Inclusive and the positive changes being made to encourage diversity in IP. He is also a member of the IP Society (IPSoc), The International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) and The Union of European Practitioners in Intellectual Property (Union-IP).

Having been brought up in Germany, Andrew is fluent in both English and German. Before joining Murgitroyd in 2022, Andrew spent more than 12 years in private practice at another large patent attorney firm based in the UK.
