Patent strategy takes manufacturer from university spin-out to global force

Background #

Hexigone Ltd is a multi-award-winning manufacturer of chromate-free, chemically intelligent corrosion inhibitors.

We have worked with Hexigone since its inception as a spin-out company from Swansea University. Its aim is to become a major manufacturer of an additive that protects metal assets when used in coatings in the marine, protective, industrial, aerospace and coil coatings industry. We drafted Hexigone’s first ever patent application in 2015 and has managed its IP strategy ever since.

The opportunity #

Corrosion costs the economy trillions of dollars every year, and despite being highly effective, the EU has banned the use of hexavalent chromate due to its toxic and carcinogenic nature. Coatings companies are now looking for a safe, cost-effective alternative that delivers the results of chromate inhibitors.

Hexigone embarked on the challenge of finding a chrome-free replacement. Its team moved research and development away from mainstream thinking to explore smart-release vehicles that can hold onto chemicals which were previously incompatible with coatings. The result was a safer, smarter way to protect against corrosion.

Action #

After managing the transfer of Hexigone’s first patent family from Swansea University, we advised on how to obtain the optimal patent protection for its key product to maximise company value. Having subsequently filed two further patent families, with the grant of patents starting to come through, we are focused on protecting both Hexigone’s original product and the value in the improvements that have been made over time.

Outcome #

Hexigone now has a strong portfolio of IP rights, making it well-equipped for future growth. Its additives are transforming the coatings industry by both meeting the strictest global environmental standards and providing an improved corrosion resistance over traditional additives.

Feedback #

“Tom Baker has been excellent at creating and executing our IP strategy from a university [spin-out] to a commercial company selling globally. Tom is meticulous with the information to gain granted status, balancing activities with our budget.”
