Marina Mauro

Director, Patents

Marina Mauro’s core area of expertise lies within the field of organic chemistry. She has a focus on pharmaceutical drugs and imaging agents for diagnostic medicine such as x-ray imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, contrast enhanced ultrasound and nuclear medicine through radioactive tracers.

Marina has significant experience in developing and managing worldwide patent portfolios — including the preparation and prosecution of patent applications — around new therapeutic and diagnostic products. She also advises on both patentability (opinion) and freedom-to-operate (FTO), in addition to Supplementary Patent Certificates (SPCs) in her role as a technical expert in patent and SPC litigations (to which she was appointed by Italian Judges). Marina is also a qualified European Patent Litigator, able to represent clients in front of the Unified Patent Court.

Having held in-house managerial positions at multinational pharmaceutical companies including GlaxoSmithKline and Bracco Group, Marina has a deep understanding of clients’ strategic IP needs. She is equally adept when working with small- and medium-sized companies and research centres to develop their IP estates and derive maximum return from IP spend.

Marina’s scientific credentials include a Doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Milan and three years working as a senior scientist at the Sigma-Tau Prassis Institute, where she researched new antihypertensive drugs. She has authored many scientific publications and is a named patent inventor.

In 2022, Marina was elected as a Substitute Member of the Disciplinary Board of the Italian Industrial Property Consultants Institute, and in 2025, she became a full Member. In 2023, Marina was elected as a substitute EPI Council Member and appointed as a Member of the EPI Disciplinary Committee. She is actively involved in lecturing on IP-related issues and tutoring for the Italian Qualifying Examination.

A key part of our Patent Box team, Marina advises many clients with business interests in Italy on how to maximise the benefit they receive from the scheme. Marina is also part of our dedicated unitary patent team, which advises on all aspects of the Unified Patent Court.

Marina joined Murgitroyd in 2011. She was appointed Director, Patents in August 2021.
