Barry Moore joined Murgitroyd in August 2021 following the acquisition of Hanna Moore + Curley by Murgitroyd. Barry is Regional Head, Patents Ireland, Director, Patents, a European Patent Attorney, a Chartered Patent Attorney (UK), an Irish Patent and Trade Mark Attorney, and also a Community Trade Mark and Design Attorney. He is a Chartered Physicist and has over 20 years’ experience in private practice.

An Entrance Scholar to University College Dublin based on his results in history, Barry graduated with an MSc in Experimental Physics. He then worked for a campus company commercialising products in the field of environmental sensing originating from research derived from the Applied Physics laboratory. It was this work that provided initial exposure to patents, Barry is a named inventor on US 6 028 663. Subsequent to this work in a start-up environment, entered the patent profession more than 20 years ago. In 2003 Barry co-founded Hanna Moore + Curley.

As a physicist, in recent years Barry has been responsible for prosecuting thousands of patent applications in the fields of telecommunications, mobile devices, security and software. He has drafted hundreds of applications both in these technology areas but also in the mechanical, electronic and medical device fields. His expertise in conducting oral hearings before the EPO Examination and Opposition Divisions, and the Appeal Boards is regularly called upon by his international clients.

His non-EPO specific activities include all aspects of advisory services relating to IP strategy, due diligence and opinion work, and in recent years international litigation. Barry recently coordinated the successful revocation of two competitors’ patents at the UK’s Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC), a decision that was upheld by the UK Court of Appeal.

Barry is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (UK) and a member of the Irish Association of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys (APTMA). Barry has been regularly listed as an IP Star and a member of IAM’s Patent 1000. In its inaugural 2020 IAM Global leaders listing, Barry is the only named Irish Patent Attorney – as detailed by IAM itself, IAM Global Leaders merit special attention not only because of their expertise and experience relating to creating, protecting, managing, transacting and enforcing critical patent rights, but also for their ability to innovate, inspire and go above and beyond to deliver for their clients.
