
Simon Eddowes
Senior Patent Attorney
Simon is a European Patent Attorney and a UK Chartered Patent Attorney and is based in Cambridge. Simon holds a degree in Biological Sciences with honours in Microbiology from Edinburgh University. Following graduation, Simon worked for a UK-based multinational household and Pharmaceutical company for eight years as a Development Microbiologist and then as a Formulation Chemist, before joining the in-house Patent Department to train as a patent attorney, eventually becoming the Manager of the Pharmaceutical Patents Department.
In 1997, Simon moved into private practice and has worked with several companies, becoming a Partner and subsequently counsel in a major practice. Simon has represented clients of all sizes, from individuals and start-ups to universities and multinational companies. He has handled a wide range of technologies, including industrial chemistry and processes, catalysts, pharmaceuticals, novel materials, biotechnology, immunology, polymer films, polymer chemistry, and medical devices. During this time, Simon handled all aspects of intellectual property, with a particular focus on patent drafting and prosecution before the UK and European Patent Offices, as well as patent portfolio management, freedom-to-operate assessments, infringement and validity opinions.
In 2016, Simon returned to industry, working for a multi-national composites manufacturer, drafting and prosecuting patent applications and providing advice on freedom to operate and business development.
Simon particularly enjoys working with inventors to help them develop their ideas, and with businesses to help them to grow by exploiting their intellectual property whilst avoiding challenges from competitors. He particularly specialises in patent drafting and prosecution, oppositions and appeals, freedom-to-operate analysis, patent portfolio management, and IP strategy.
