Director, Patents
Karen Fraser specialises in patent matters relating to computer software and hardware, media streaming, and telecommunications. Much of her work is in computer-implemented inventions (CII), where subject-matter lies close to the border of patentability in Europe and the UK.
The subject-matter that Karen specialises in includes fintech, blockchain technology, cryptocurrency-based systems, gaming technology, telecoms and SEPs, content delivery networks (especially in relation to media streaming protocols and systems for OTT media services), IoT- and AI-based applications, secure transmission of sensitive data (in compliance with data security standards), cryptography and cybersecurity among many others. Karen entered the profession in 2004.
Karen works closely with her clients to identify aspects of their inventions that are eligible for patent protection in Europe. She has a wealth of experience in advising clients on patentability, invention capture, drafting and filing strategies, as well as infringement and validity matters. Although most of her work relates to patent matters before the EPO and the UKIPO, Karen also manages global patent portfolios for several of her clients for their applications in many countries outside Europe. Her work enables clients to align their IP strategy and business objectives at all stages of the patenting process.
She is one of the founding leaders of the European Patent Pipeline Program (EPPP). The EPPP is an initiative that Murgitroyd co-founded, which aims to provide a structured, tailored internship opportunity to bring our fantastic European patent profession to a wider and diverse audience.
Karen is based in our London Central office.
